CHAPTER TEN

Here’s something that most people don’t realize about close quarters combat.

It’s hard. The mark of a good fighter, be they armed with a rifle or just fists, is great footwork. Cramped confines play hell with stuff like that, and force you to to keep an eye on the ground or risk tripping over obstacles, the person you’re trying to hurt, or your own damn feet. Too close walls and random outcroppings like bathroom sinks can also get in the way too, forcing your punches to divert into odd arcs of motion that sap their power.

All of those problems were present as I rushed across the kid’s rented bathroom. As I moved, a rush of whispers, alien, unnerving, and speaking in Faerie, provided a barely audible commentary as I reached with my lightning covered hand. The intruding voices rose in number and volume as I approached, and I had to focus hard to ignore them as I tried to get a hold of the fae.

Like I said, close quarters combat is hard. Just about the only thing that I had going for me was that I wasn’t trying to batter or bash fae into submission. I just had to get my fingers, and the electricity cracking around them, on its grassy skin.

The fae saw my approach and twisted, his motions blindingly fast, to lift up and place the kid between the two of us. With the big brother of a static shock still crackling in my hands, I jerked my hand to the side to avoid touching the hostage, and sending God knows how much voltage through them.

The crackle of electricity in my hand flared in brightness and intensity for a heartbeat, before fading away. My lone relief was that the whispers faded as well.

As the last traces of power fled from my grasp, I heard a rumble of thunder so muted that it barely registered as an identifiable sound. My first thought was that the sound had come from outside the kid’s rented walls. Then my ears picked out its actual origin. It wasn’t coming from outside the house.

It had come from inside the mud covered fae itself.

The shotgun torn creature looked just as shocked as I was for a moment. I was wondering just what in the Hell happened, when I remembered a conversation I’d had with Tati when she’d first tried, and failed, to teach me how to throw lightning.

“What just happened?” I’d asked her.

“I think you called down a bolt of lightning.” she’d replied.

I remembered looking around and tilting my head to the side in confusion. Just like then, I hadn’t seen lightning. Just a trickle of electricity that covered my hand.

“Where’d it land?” I’d asked her.

“Don’t quote me on this.” Tati had said. “But my guess is somewhere in Faerie.”

“Is that a bad thing?” I’d asked.

“For us?” she’d said. “Probably not. But I wouldn’t wanna be standing wherever it hit.”

Back in the bathroom, the moss covered fae was still staring at me, wondering what trick I’d pull out of a hat next.
